Magic or Science? Inside the lab.

Could the intense color of paprika be the result of something almost magical?

The reality is that behind every batch there is much more than meets the eye. The real story begins in the laboratory, where technology and analysis transform color into data that helps guarantee quality, consistency, and product performance.

At Omega Spice, one of the key quality controls performed in our laboratory is the determination of ASTA Color. This analysis measures the concentration of extractable carotenoid pigments responsible for paprika’s characteristic red colour. Using the official ASTA analytical method and spectrophotometric measurement, we obtain an objective value expressed in ASTA units, allowing us to classify each batch according to its colouring strength.

However, understanding color is only part of the story. It is also essential to know how the paprika will perform in its final application. For this reason, we determine the ASTA value the international standard used to measure paprika’s coloring strength. This analysis quantifies the concentration of natural pigments responsible for its characteristic red color and helps classify each batch according to its coloring capacity.

ASTA Color analysis is one of the key tools used to evaluate paprika quality. By objectively measuring its colouring strength through the quantification of extractable carotenoid pigments, this analysis provides reliable data to ensure batch-to-batch consistency, meet customer specifications, and select the most appropriate raw material for each food application.

Behind every paprika product, there is much more than meets the eye: analysis, precision, technology, and expertise. It may seem like magic to achieve the same color every time. But the real magic lies in the science behind it.
